Leave your first trail.

Evograph is a local CLI that records the reasoning behind your code. Its executable is called ecs. You need Node.js 22.12 or later and a repository you can write to. Git is useful for versioning your records and connecting changes.

1. Install and initialize

npm install -g @evograph/cli
cd your-project
ecs init --agents codex

Replace codex with claude, cursor, copilot, windsurf, or antigravity for your setup. You can pass a comma-separated list. Running ecs init without flags opens an interactive agent selector.

The CLI creates .evolution/, a protocol file, and the selected agent instruction files. Existing instruction files are skipped unless you explicitly use --force. Read any generated instructions before committing them.

2. Record a problem and decision

This command is noninteractive. Copy the whole block:

ecs close-session \
--problem-title "Context disappears between sessions" \
--problem-description "The diff survives, but the rationale stays in chat." \
--decision-title "Keep decisions with the repository" \
--chosen "Store a linked graph in .evolution/" \
--rationale "The next session should be able to recover our reasoning." \
--alternatives "Chat history,A separate hosted knowledge base" \
  --status in-progress

It creates a problem, creates a decision, and links the decision to the problem with a solves edge. It prints the resulting IDs. Content-identical records reuse their IDs.

3. Read the context

ecs context
ecs graph
ecs list

ecs context prints problem and decision summaries plus recent decision graphs. Use ecs show <id> for the complete record, including rationale and alternatives. IDs can be unique prefixes.

4. Keep the record with the code

Evograph writes files locally. It does not commit or push them for you. Review the records, then add the files you intend to share:

git add .evolution AGENTS.md
git commit -m "Record the repository context workflow"

Include other generated instruction files you chose, such as CLAUDE.md. Check your ignore rules if .evolution/ does not appear in Git. Keep secrets, credentials, private customer information, and sensitive logs out of records you may commit.

5. Connect a real change

Run ecs create decision in a terminal for the interactive flow. After recording the decision, the CLI can offer to link an existing problem and selected Git worktree files or a recent commit. The attached change is a record of file paths and status, or commit details; it is not a copy of your diff.

The flag-based create and close-session flows do not automatically attach Git changes. ecs link <from> <to> <relation> connects existing objects.

Before the next session

Run ecs context, inspect relevant decisions with ecs show, and load that context into your coding workflow. The agent guide explains the generated instructions and their limits.
